Give Our Hearts Faith in Christ’s Work

matthiasgrunewald_thecrucifixion2Merciful, eternal God,
you did not spare your own Son,
but gave him up for us all
to bear our sins on the cross.
Give our hearts such faith
that we may never be frightened
or despair;
through your Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Amen. Luther.

Good Friday Prayer

O God, Son of God,
you suffered for us,
the righteous for the unrighteous.
Save us by the shame of your Passion,
and clothe us with the robe of your righteousness.
Through the suffering and death you did not deserve,
we have escaped the punishment our sins have deserved.
Amen.

For Love

Coptic[1]O God of love,
you have given a new commandment through your only Son
that we should love one another as you have loved us,
the unworthy and the wandering,
and you gave your beloved Son
for our life and salvation.
Lord, give to us, your servants,
in all time of our life on the earth,
a mind forgetful of past anger,
a pure conscience and sincere thoughts,
and a heart to love our neighbors;
for the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

you are blessed,
and live and govern all things,
now and forever.

Move Us to Thanks for Jesus’ Suffering

matthiasgrunewald_thecrucifixion2Almighty Father, eternal God,
for us you sent your Son
and let him suffer
the pain of the cross,
that he might drive away from us
all the terror of the evil foe.
Move us to joyfully give thanks for his suffering
through which we have received
forgiveness of sins
and redemption from eternal death;
through your Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Original in German:

Amen. Luther.

Gewalt can be translated as “power,” “violence,” “force,” “might,” or  “control.” “Terror” seemed to sum up all these well.

Give Your Living Water to Us Who Thirst

O Jesus, Son of God the Father,
Fount of Life everlasting,
give your living water to us who thirst,
give us eternal life.
Hear us in your mercy, O Christ Jesus.
With the Father and the Holy Spirit,
we worship and glorify you,
one God,
now and forever.
Amen.
