Swedish Christmas Prayer

church_of_sweden_2856028423629Merciful God, loving Father,
we give you thanks and praise
that you have mercifully fulfilled
the word of your promise to the patriarchs
and sent your only Son to become man
for our salvation and blessedness.

O Lord Jesus Christ,
eternal praise be to you,
that you, being rich, for our sakes became poor,
that we through your poverty might become rich;
that you have become our brother,
that we with you might become the children of God.
Grant that you may be born in our hearts,
just as you, though you are Lord of lords,
have for our sakes become a child,
so give us the right childlike mind.
You are the brightness of the Father’s glory
and image of his person,
renew us in your holy likeness.

Heavenly Light,
lighten us through the darkness of this world.
Eternal Life, give us life in you.
Great Prince of Peace, grant us your peace,
and keep us ever in your kingdom,
that we may praise and magnify you in your glory:
you, with the Father and the Holy Spirit live and reign forever.
Amen.

Prayer for the Twenty-First Sunday after Pentecost

O Lord Jesus Christ,
make us to live sober,
righteous and godly in this present world,
looking for the blessed hope and your glorious appearing,
May we run in the way of your commandments,
and may attain your heavenly promises;
through your mercy,
O our God, you are blessed,
and live and govern all things,
now and forever.
Amen.

Fix Our Hearts on True Joys

O God,
you make the minds of the faithful
to be of one will.
Grant that we may love what you command
and desire what you promise,
that among the many changes of this world,
our hearts may always be fixed
where true joys are found;
through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever.
Amen.

May We Pursue Your Promises without Stumbling

Almighty and eternal God,
it is by your gifts alone
that your faithful people perform
true and praiseworthy service.
Grant that we may pursue your promises without stumbling;
through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever.
Amen.

Increase in Us Faith, Hope, and Love

Almighty and eternal God,
increase in us faith, hope, and love.
Lead us to love what you command
so that we may obtain what you promise;
through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever.
Amen.

Pour Your Love into Our Hearts

O God,
you have prepared for those who love you
such good things as surpass our understanding.
Pour into our hearts such love toward you
that we may love you above all things,
and lead us by faith to your eternal promises,
which exceed all that we can desire;
through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever.
Amen.

Prayer Reflecting on Violence in Milwaukee, August 13-14, 2016

O, dear Lord Jesus Christ,
you told your disciples,
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.
Not as the world gives do I give to you.
Let not your hearts be troubled,
neither let them be afraid” (John 14:27).
When we see violence instead of peace,
it is so tempting to let our hearts be troubled and afraid.
That Thursday night in that upper room
the peace you spoke of was the peace of forgiveness,
the peace of being connected to you,
the peace of being children of God in faith.
Turn our eyes to your cross
to remember how from the violence of your cross
you brought forth peace and reconciliation for the world.
Renew in our hearts the peace you promised,
and make us your people who share that peace.
Guide us so that when we feel frustrated and angry,
we still seek to glorify you
and love and serve our neighbors.
From your holy Gospel,
bring your peace and reconciliation
to individual hearts,
and so dispel trouble and calm fear;
in your most holy name we ask it.
Amen.
