Increase Our Faith, Certainty and Hope

19_x_Grunewald_Resurrection-615x1024.jpgDear God,
through Jesus Christ
give us your Holy Spirit
that we may rightly be comforted
by your resurrection,
and day by day increase
in such faith
and certainty and hope,
and finally be saved.
Amen.

Give Our Hearts Faith in Christ’s Work

matthiasgrunewald_thecrucifixion2Merciful, eternal God,
you did not spare your own Son,
but gave him up for us all
to bear our sins on the cross.
Give our hearts such faith
that we may never be frightened
or despair;
through your Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Amen. Luther.

For Holy Thursday

Última_Cena_-_Juan_de_Juanes.jpgO dear God,
through this wonderful sacrament
of your suffering,
you have commanded us
to remember and proclaim it.
Move us to make use
of this sacrament
of your body and blood,
that your redemption
may bear fruit in us daily.
Amen.

Amen. Luther.

Move Us to Thanks for Jesus’ Suffering

matthiasgrunewald_thecrucifixion2Almighty Father, eternal God,
for us you sent your Son
and let him suffer
the pain of the cross,
that he might drive away from us
all the terror of the evil foe.
Move us to joyfully give thanks for his suffering
through which we have received
forgiveness of sins
and redemption from eternal death;
through your Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Amen. Luther.

Gewalt can be translated as “power,” “violence,” “force,” “might,” or  “control.” “Terror” seemed to sum up all these well.

Send Your Holy Spirit

send us your Holy Spirit,
that he may take the Word we have heard
and write it in our hearts,
so that we grasp it,
believe it,
and find our joy
and comfort in it
forever.
Amen.

Let Your Rich Mercy Be with Us

800px-lucas_cranach_d-c384-_-_martin_luther2c_1528_28veste_coburg29_28cropped29Almighty God,
you are the protector
of all who hope in you.
Without your grace,
no one can do anything,
or merit anything before you.
Let your mercy be with us richly,
so that as you dwell in us,
we think what is right
and by your work in us,
we do what is right;
for the sake of Jesus Christ,
your Son, our Lord.
Amen.

Amen. Luther.

This prayer is Luther’s German translation of this Gregorian prayer in Latin.

To God, the Lord, Belongs Deliverance from Death

God, my heavenly Father,
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ and God of all comfort,
I thank you that you have revealed to me your Son Jesus Christ,
in whom I have believed,
whom I have preached,
whom I have confessed,
whom I love and worship
as my dear Savior and Redeemer,
whom the the multitude of the ungodly
persecute, revile, and blaspheme.
My Lord Jesus Christ, receive my soul.
O heavenly Father, though I be snatched out of this life,
though I must now lay down this body,
yet know I with certainty that I will live with you forever,
and that no one can pluck me out of your hands.
Father, into your hands I commend my spirit,
you have redeemed me, O Lord, God of truth.
‘God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.’
‘Our God is a God of salvation,
and to God, the Lord, belongs deliverance from death.’
Amen.
