God’s Sovereign Purpose

Almighty God,
no one can nullify
your sovereign purpose.
Give us faith
to stand calm and undismayed
amid the tumults of the world,
knowing that your kingdom still comes
and your will still is done,
to the eternal glory of your name;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Original in traditional English:

Almighty God, whose sovereign purpose none can make void: Give us faith to stand calm and undismayed amid the tumults of the world, knowing that thy kingdom shall come and thy will be done, to the eternal glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

(The contemporary version interprets “shall” as expressing a present progressive tense rather than a future because of its closeness to “thy will be done.”)
